2010-2011 List of QAA Events

Here is a comprehensive list of all the events being planned by QAA for the 2010-2011 year. This list is also available as a document (.docx) (coming soon).

Panel of Interns

Commerce students will be invited to watch a panel discussion of senior students who interned at Deloitte, KPMG, E&Y, PwC and RSM Richter over the summer. This event will allow those interested in pursuing a career in accounting to gain valuable insight into the internship application process, work experience, corporate culture and career opportunities with each firm, so they may determine which firm is a better fit for them.

Accounting Opens Doors

This event will offer students the chance to learn about the requirements and opportunities the CMA and CGA designations afford. This gives students an opportunity to learn about career paths outside of the CA designation. This year, we plan on expanding this event to encompass a much broader range of interests. In addition to CMA and CGA representatives, industry professionals working in unconventional accounting career paths, such as finance or banking, and small-sized firms will be invited to share their experience with students. This will broaden the scope of accounting-related careers for students.

A Q&A and networking session with the speakers will follow, complete with drinks and hors d'oeuvres. Queen’s has hosted this event in the past to great response.

QAA Case Competition

After a highly successful first year, QAA will host another annual accounting competition. Students will be given the opportunity to test their accounting skills in a team-based environment. Participants will be given one week to complete a challenging accounting case developed by the QAA executive and several Queen’s accounting professors. This year, depending on judges’ availability, there may be the option of presenting the case live in front of judges in addition to the written case. Any input in writing or judging the case will be greatly appreciated. A celebratory dinner is held for the winning team and industry professionals involved in the case.

Accounting Week

This is QAA’s most important annual event, and is also one of the largest networking events hosted by the Queen’s School of Business. It attracts more than 100 accounting-bound students to Goodes Hall to mingle with representatives from the various accounting firms, such as Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG, E&Y, RSM Richter, and the ICAO. Firm's Night typically spans two hours in length and promises a strong turnout of students. This event offers a great opportunity for accounting-bound students to meet recruiters and learn about their careers, and also allows them to compare the different firms.
