Certified General Accountants of Ontario

Earning the CGA designation gives you the distinctive edge within the business community, opening doors to employment and a wide range of career options. With the CGA program of professional studies, you don’t need to choose between school and work because you earn while you learn.

Immediate career advantages

Why wait? Enjoy career benefits upon enrolment in the CGA program of professional studies. The majority of students advance to interesting, challenging and rewarding positions long before achieving the CGA designation.

Employers recognize that students in the program are being groomed for success under Canada’s finest and most demanding financial management curriculum. They are looking for individuals who show high levels of dedication and competence – hallmarks of students in the CGA program – and are keen to add them to high level teams.

Unlimited advancement and earning potential

As a CGA, you can command maximum earning power and thrive in a top position. Many CGAs hold senior financial executive positions – as presidents, CEOs, CFOs, directors and partners – and rank in the top five per cent of income earners in Canada.

Recognized professional competence

As a CGA, you will adhere to one of Canada’s most respected codes of ethics and rules of professional conduct, and be respected for your commitment to continuing professional development.

The business, academic and professional communities hold the CGA designation in the highest regard for its unwavering focus on the development and maintenance of professional competence.

Standards that meet rising academic benchmarks

To address the growing demand for ever-higher qualifications, standards and skills in accounting and finance professionals, CGA Ontario complements its professional training program with a degree requirement. This ensures that all CGAs are fully equipped to exceed the changing demands of the globally focused business

CGA Ontario is an affiliate of the Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA Canada), the professional association representing a network of 75,000 CGAs and students across the nation and working abroad. Recognized internationally, CGA Canada is a full partner of the leading accounting standards organizations.

Queen’s students who graduate with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree, specializing in accounting, need to pass a technical proficiency exam and complete two courses with 16 hours of exams to meet the academic requirements to earn both a CGA designation and a public accounting licence. Specific employment experience requirements in a CGA Ontario approved training office also apply. Graduates who seek a career path in industry, not-for-profit or government can choose to complete four courses with 10 hours of exams and meet the employment experience requirements with an employer of their choice.
